While indoor dining above 25% capacity may not materialize until the winter months bring New Yorkers back to their radiators, restaurants could have an opportunity to make more money. as long as they can.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced his administration would reserve additional locations in the five boroughs for restaurants to serve outdoors on weekdays with streets closed to vehicular traffic as part of the expansion of the Open Streets initiative and Open Restaurants based on requests from BIDs, community organizations and restaurant groups.

“Restaurants deserve every chance they can have to serve more customers this fall – and, as the weather gets colder, New Yorkers deserve every chance to enjoy al fresco dining,” said de Blasio. “The Open Streets: Restaurants program has been a success, and we are proud to expand its reach and give restaurants more tools to navigate this crisis. “

While originally street closures were only for weekends when they were announced three months ago, there will now be weekday hours during which street closures will be in effect. According to Blasio’s administration, 87 corridors are currently reserved for the service with 10,200 companies using the space and have saved around 90,000 jobs.

In his morning press conference, de Blasio said the city is also expected to provide open streets and open restaurants next year, but is hoping a COVID-19 vaccine will be available then giving homeowners a boost. companies injured during the pandemic.

“The Open Streets initiative has already saved tens of thousands of jobs in New York City, so we expect car-free alfresco dining on weekdays to boost the economy even more. economy and quality of life in our neighborhoods, ”he added. said Minister of Transport Commissioner Polly Trottenberg. “We thank Mayor de Blasio and all of our agency partners and community organizations who have come together to expand what has already been an incredibly successful team effort. Open Restaurants has been a lifeline for the restaurant industry during the COVID crisis, and has also helped all New Yorkers see new possibilities to use our streets in the future. “
