Kings Heath restaurant staff injured after ‘drunken threesome started fighting people’ on York Road

Police have called for witnesses after three people were allegedly assaulted by ‘drunken men’ in Kings Heath.

It is understood that members of staff at Grace and James Deli and the nearby POLI pizzeria suffered minor injuries after being “attacked” on Wednesday evening (July 21).

West Midlands Police told BirminghamLive that “three men, suspected of being intoxicated, have allegedly started fighting members of the public on York Road”.

The incident took place just off King Heath High Street at around 9 p.m.

A man and a woman, both in their twenties, were slightly injured. A man in his thirties was also affected; fortunately, his injuries are not serious, the force said.



Grace and James on York Road is popular for its wine and cold cuts

POLI Pizzeria and Grace and James – a bar and deli – are independent businesses run by husband and wife team Henry and Sophie Poultney.

In a post on restaurant Facebook pages, Mr and Mrs Poultney said they would not be opening any of these sites today (Thursday, July 21) after “the attack on their staff.”

The post read “although we love where we work and live, it’s not great to feel unsafe on your doorstep.”

In the moving Facebook post, the owners said: “Unfortunately we won’t be open today (Thursday 22) – we apologize for the late notice.

“Unfortunately, last night several members of our G + J and POLI team were physically assaulted while at work.

“It’s safe to say that rocked us all. No one should go to work and run the risk of being assaulted.

“We need a day or two to recover and decide where we’re going from here and let the police do their job. ⁣

“We are very sorry to everyone who has been booked with us at Grace + James, POLI or Upstairs today. We will be contacting all reservations this morning to rearrange.”

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman told BirminghamLive: ‘We are investigating after three people were assaulted in King’s Heath last night (July 21).

“Three men, suspected of being intoxicated, reportedly started fighting members of the public at York Road at around 9 pm. A man and a woman, both in their 20s, were slightly injured. A man was injured. in his thirties was also affected; luckily his injuries were not serious.

“The men also caused criminal damage to a parked gray Toyota Auris before leaving the scene.

“Any witnesses who were in the area at the time and who have not yet spoken to us are kindly requested to contact us.”
