On that day, guests will enjoy a free pumpkin cake at the famous restaurant at 408 W. Rosemary Street in Chapel Hill. Mama Dip’s is also proud to announce a “Favorite Food” children’s drawing contest, where the winner will receive a birthday party for 10 children at Mama Dip’s restaurant. The competition begins 11/15/2016 and runs until 12/15/2016. All drawings should be mailed to 408 W. Rosemary Street at Chapel Hill.

Mildred board “Mama Dip” founded the now iconic restaurant on November 15, 1976 at the behest of a real estate agent who was looking for a hero to save a failing restaurant. With just $ 64 to her name, Mildred shopped for her first meal to serve. She reinvested those profits and her legacy grew from there.

Life, as Mildred explains, is like a pumpkin seed. A single seed can produce bountiful harvests, incredible memories, and limitless potential.

“From kids stopping to admire the pumpkin lantern, from neighbors enjoying pumpkin pies to animals eating pumpkin seeds outside, I thought to myself that so much happiness comes only from those pumpkin seeds. “said Mildred. “My life, through this pumpkin seed, has brought me so much happiness and joy.”

Mildred has since become a staple of not just African Americans and Chapel Hill communities, but also beyond. Born April 11, 1929, Mildred has been featured on Good Morning America, Southern Living, and Cooking Live on the Food Network. She wrote two remarkable books, Mama Dip’s kitchen and Mama Dip’s Family Cookbook, in which she not only shares recipes, but also life stories.
